ENGLEWOOD — No one was inside a house that burned down in Englewood Wednesday, Chicago Fire Department officials said.

Just after noon, fire officials responded to a call of a two-and-a-half story house burning on the 6900 block of South Prairie Avenue, according to Juan Hernandez, a CFD spokesman. Responders don't know how the fire started, Hernandez said, but it spread from the first floor.

Firefighters extinguished the fire within about 30 minutes, but not before the building was severely damaged.

"The building appears to be occupied, but no one's home. ... We're still waiting for someone to come home," said a firefighter at the scene, who declined to give his name, shortly after the fire was extinguished. "Usually a fire never gets this big if someone's inside. ... It had to go up far enough for neighbors to notice."

George Davis, who lives across the street from the burned house, said he came outside his house when he heard sirens and saw the neighboring home engulfed in flames.

"It was very upsetting," Davis said. "Now all we got is another vacant, another abandoned house. Too many of those around here already."
