UPTOWN — A man robbed a cellphone store at gunpoint in Uptown Monday morning, police said.

Around 11:05 a.m., a man in his 20s walked into a cellphone store in the 4400 block of North Sheridan Road pulled out a gun and announced a robbery, said Officer Janel Sedevic, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.

Employees fled the store through the back door and called police, Sedevic said.

An employee of the store, who refused to give her name, said she was working alone Monday when a man armed with a gun appeared behind the counter of the store, which sells refurbished cellphones and phone cases. The store is actually two conjoined cellphone stores with store fronts on Sheridan Road and Broadway, she said.

"He came in through the other store. I didn't see him coming. He just appeared beyond the counter and showed the gun," she said.

Moments after the man walked into the store, two customers walked in and the man told her to play it cool. Instead, the cashier saw her chance and told the customers to call the police as she ran passed the man.

"This is how you want to play it," the thief told the cashier as she ran out of the store.

The man left the store with an unknown amount of cellphones. He was wearing a red T-shirt and black pants during the robbery, Sedevic said. He was also wearing a hat, the cashier said.

The incident was caught on camera and no one was injured in the incident.

According to Crime in Wrigleyville and Boystown, after robbing the store the man put on a construction vest and hard hat as he ran northbound. Police could not confirm the change of clothing.
