UPTOWN — A new discount clothing store is heading to Uptown, officials confirmed Tuesday.

Ross Dress For Less signed a lease for the space at 918 W. Montrose Ave., a spokesman for the company said Tuesday morning. The spokesman would not provide further details about the deal or when the store would open.

Ross has been around since 1982 and has been bringing its customers "a constant stream of high quality department and specialty store brands," according to the Ross website.

Early renderings of the space, obtained by Uptown Update, show that Ross Dress For Less would be the anchor tenant and an additional 4,800 square feet remained for another retail space. The site would have 73 parking spots, Uptown Update said.

Uptown resident Evelyn Brown said she was excited and has been talking with neighbors about the new store. While they are welcoming of the new Ross, there are still a few hang-ups, she said.

"It's too small for more shops. We want all that space to be Ross. We don't need a dentist office," she said pointing to the Lake Shore Dental just a block east on Montrose Avenue. "We got restaurants down the street. We want as much Ross as we can get there."

The store would be across the street from World Gym Fitness Center and Jewel-Osco and between a row of apartment buildings. Yndago Robinson has lived in the neighborhood most of her life and was happy something was coming to the abandoned space, she said.

"It's been pretty vacant for a while. I don't remember what was there. I think it'll be pretty good though," said Robinson, adding she's bought shirts, pants and jeans from the store and is excited for it to open.

Her only question was: "when will Ross open?"
