COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A high school senior was held on $750,000 bail Monday after prosecutors said he shot a woman in her head in Austin over the weekend.

The victim, a 25-year-old Austin resident, wasn't the intended target, Assistant State's Attorney Lorraine Scaduto said during a bond hearing Monday. The woman required surgery, during which part of her scalp had to be removed, Scaduto added. As of Monday afternoon, her condition had stabilized.

Devante Taylor, an 18-year-old from northwest suburban Des Plaines, was charged with aggravated battery by discharging a firearm.

Taylor is accused of opening fire in the 5200 block of West Adams Street shortly before 10 p.m. Saturday — striking the woman in the back of her head, Scaduto said.

When police arrived on the scene, a witness flagged down officers and told them the shooter had run into a nearby apartment building, according to an arrest report. Taylor was arrested about 10:30 p.m. in the 5300 block of West Monroe Street.

He had a gun in his pocket, Scaduto said. And his clothing matched the description of the shooter, court records show.

Cook County Judge Donald Panarese Jr. on Monday ordered Taylor held in lieu of $750,000 bail.

Taylor's attorney said Taylor will be a high school senior in the fall.
