Tourists at 360 Chicago Get True Taste of City Via Neighborhood Photography

LAKEVIEW — It was the first warm day in May, and the Cubs were going into extra innings.

Ulysses Salcido left Wrigley Field to explore "the spine of Wrigleyville," pausing when he came across a man named Louis Armstrong, who strummed a jazzy tune on his guitar in between selling peanuts to passing Cubs fans.

"Just like everyone who passes him, [Armstrong] greeted me as a mere kindness as he played his guitar. We shared the enjoyment of being outdoors, especially on that clear, warm and sunny day," Salcido later recalled.

Salcido, 26, spent two hours with Armstrong as the Hermosa photographer waited to snap the perfect photo, which now hangs 94 floors above the city in 360 Chicago — formerly the John Hancock Observatory — at 875 N. Michigan Ave.

To celebrate the opening of its new cafe and bar Architect's Corner, 360 Chicago unveiled the winners of its neighborhood-focused photo contest, which now greet observatory visitors so they "emerge with an understanding of what makes each neighborhood so unique."

Along with Lakeview and Wrigleyville, other neighborhoods featured include Bronzeville, Bucktown, Hyde Park, Logan Square, Old Town, Pilsen and Wicker Park. The winning images were selected from more than 1,200 entries.

For PICuliar photographer Cody Giguere, a photo of Chicago needed to depict more than the standard skyline or dime-a-dozen downtown scenes.

Giguere, 21, shot the winning Lakeview photo atop the Paulina Brown Line 'L' station, hoping to capture the sense of home he felt at his most-frequented CTA stop.

"To me, Chicago is more than just downtown, and I wanted to represent that. This picture shows the wonderful skyscrapers of Chicago in the distance, but it also shows the beauty that the neighborhoods of Chicago have to show as well," Giguere said.

The nine contest winners received lifetime passes to 360 Chicago, which was renamed in 2014 to highlight the 360-degree experience and panoramic views the observation deck offers. Parent company Montparnasse 56 also added the Tilt attraction in 2014 and installed a mirrored ceiling above the entire 94th floor.

The newly opened Architect's Corner offers coffee, gelato, artisanal snacks and a full bar.
