HUMBOLDT PARK — A vigil for Amari Brown will be held Thursday night, five days after the 7-year-old boy was gunned down in Humboldt Park.
The Peace and Prayer Vigil starts at 7 p.m. in the 1100 block of North Harding Avenue, the same corner where Amari, of East Garfield Park, was shot and killed Saturday.
The vigil is organized by Parents for Peace and Justice, a group founded by Elizabeth Ramirez, whose son was shot and killed at his birthday party in 2011. Ramirez frequently attends and organizes antiviolence events in and around Humboldt Park.
“It’s not about us; it’s about them,” she told a crowd gathered in Humboldt Park back in August when neighborhood residents mourned 12 people murdered in the community that year.
According to authorities, Amari's father was standing near him and a 26-year-old woman who was also struck when the shooting occurred. Amari was described as a happy child who loved to ride his bike and play with neighborhood children, according to neighbors.
