NORTH LAWNDALE — A farmers market that sells produce grown by youth in North Lawndale will officially open for the season Wednesday.

Windy City Harvest's Lawndale Market opens for the season Wednesday at the Green Tomato Cafe, 3750 W. Ogden Ave. The market will be open 9 a.m.-1 p.m. every Wednesday through Oct. 7.

The market will feature fresh produce grown by teens on the North Lawndale Youth Farm, a thriving youth development program that helps educate and employ teens from low-income communities.

The North Lawndale Youth Farm, a Chicago Botanic Garden Windy City Harvest program, began in 2005 on a quarter-acre lot between the El tracks and Ogden Avenue. In 2012, the youth farm expanded to an additional site down the street at the Lawndale Christian Health Center, allowing more growing space to meet the needs of its 20 youth participants and the growing demand for farm fresh produce from the weekly farm stand.

Windy City Harvest also operates farms in Washington Park, the Loop and Lake County. The produce is sold at more than a dozen markets and restaurants, including the Pilsen Community Market, Yvolina's Tamales and Grocery and Belli's, both located in Pilsen.

All City of Chicago-managed market locations accept LINK and will distribute double value coupons with every LINK purchase.
