BEVERLY — The Beverly Area Arts Alliance will unveil a show called "Bizarre Creatures of Fantasy, Myth and Reality" from 7-11 p.m. Tuesday at Horse Thief Hollow.

The show is part of Local Art on Tap, a quarterly exhibition that uses the walls and other spaces within the brewpub at 10426 S. Western Ave. to showcase neighborhood artists.

This series includes paintings, drawings, photography and sculpture, said Sal Campbell, the curator for tonight's show.

“People come to Horse Thief for great beer, food and lively conversation with friends and neighbors. We're adding to the conversation with fun, interesting and engaging work from local artists,” said Campbell, who's also a board member of The Alliance.

Howard Ludwig discusses the burgeoning art scene in Beverly:

This show features the work of 18 artists, including Judie Anderson, David Barsotti, Megan Bogusko, Nicole Burns, Julie Chapetto, John Colson, Juliette Gainer, Aaron Gillespie, Peter Gizyn, Brian Keane, Jennifer Kolb, Sandra Leonard, Ben Perez, Rick Therrio, Katie Uza, Matthias “Spider” Schergen, Steve Walters, Cindy Wirtz and Chris Wilzcak.

"The opening event will include food and beer specials at Horse Thief Hollow, as well as live music and a raffle," Campbell said.

Proceeds from the raffle will be donated in support of Erin’s Farm located in Monee. The proprietor, Erin Yanz is a Beverly native. She operates the modest farm as a way to sensitize people to animals and nature. Yanz also brings some of her animals to backyard birthday celebrations, block parties and other neighborhood events.

Organizers of the Bizarre Creatures show are hoping Yanz can bring some of her animals to help celebrate the art opening, said Monica Wilczak, one of the founders of The Alliance.

Using public space to showcase local artists has become the signature of The Alliance. Its biggest event is the Beverly Art Walk, which will be held on Oct. 3. The event transforms vacant storefronts, neighborhood small businesses and other nonconventional spaces to public art galleries.

The Beverly Art Walk is meant not only to create an audience for these artists but also to foster a creative community in an area known more for its suburban-style housing than its burgeoning art scene.
