MORGAN PARK — Once roommates in Paris, a pair of artists will again share space at the Beverly Arts Center.

"Sur Papier (On Paper): Works by Anne Gilbert and Hélène Dureau Martini" will be on display from Aug. 21-Sept. 20 at the community arts center at 2407 W. 111th St. in Morgan Park.

Anne Gilbert grew up in Brussels. Hélène Dureau Martini was raised in Paris. The pair met in the mid-1980s at the Ecole Nationale Supériere des Beaux-Arts de Paris and lived together for several years after graduation.

Both Gilbert and Dureau Martini shared passion for creating art — especially painting.

Gilbert left Paris for the U.S., eventually marrying and settling in Chicago where she raised her family. Dureau Martini still lives in Paris, though she'll travel to the Beverly Arts Center for the opening reception set for 7-9 p.m. on Aug. 21.

Though their work has gone through numerous phases of exploration over the years, both painters currently choose to work on paper.

Gilbert works with the fragile line — seeing what impact it may reveal. Dureau Martini emphasizes shape and color in a manner that might be seen as so repetitive that it borders on obsession.

Beverly Arts Center curator Carla Winterbottom worked with guest curator Sandra Leonard to bring the pair to Morgan Park for an exhibit of their current work.

“The work for this show has to be relevant to the moment, and is genuine. It is a rebirth after giving birth and raising our daughters,” Gilbert said.

Admission to the Beverly Arts Center's East Gallery is free. The exhibition space is open from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 1 p.m.-4 p.m. on Sundays. For more information, call 773-445-3838 or visit beverlyartcenter.org.
