COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — It wasn't hard for police to find Kenneth Garcia, prosecutors said.
The Albany Park man accidentally dropped his car keys during a botched robbery attempt Monday afternoon — before dashing back to his unlocked car and hiding in the back seat, Assistant State's Attorney Lorraine Scaduto said during a bond hearing Tuesday.
When police arrived at the Edison Park crime scene about 1 p.m. Monday, they found Garcia, 40, crouched in the back seat of his 2004 Acura with an unloaded gun, an arrest report said. The car keys were on the ground next to the car.
Garcia is accused of approaching a young couple in the 6600 block of North Northwest Highway on Monday, flashing a gun and saying "Give me all your money," police and prosecutors said.
According to Scaduto, Garcia had been attracted to the gold bracelet one of the victims was wearing.
The man, 20, told his wife, also 20, to run into their house before asking Garcia to repeat himself, the arrest report said. The man then fought with Garcia and was able to push Garcia away. Garcia took off running, the report said, dropping his baseball cap and car keys along the way.
Both victims later positively identified Garcia as their attacker, police said.
Garcia, of the 4900 block of North Kostner Avenue, was charged with attempted armed robbery and with being an armed habitual criminal based on prior convictions for robbery and residential burglary.
On Tuesday, Cook County Judge James Brown ordered Garcia held in lieu of $250,000 bail.
