CHICAGO — Activists gathered to burn the Confederate flag in Lincoln Park Saturday night, following the Charleston church shooting that left nine people dead.

In an event post on Facebook, organizers wrote, "Chicago, the most segregated city in America, is also a cause of the same hatred and anti-blackness that led to Charleston. Stop the killing, end apartheid."

"This is not just about destruction," the Facebook post continued. "The fire we want to light is to one to rekindle the flames of freedom, equality, and dignity that have smoldered in America in recent years."

The Facebook post also called attention to the fatal shootings of several unarmed African Americans who were killed by police officers.

The flag burning was not just about the police shooting victims, the post said. "It's not all the greats taken before our time like Fred Hampton, Malcom X, Assata Shakur, and Martin Luther King. This is about an end to the celebration of systemic racism that has been held up as an icon of our national history."

During the flag burning event, the group sang, "We ain't gonna stop until people are free."
