Scofflaw Group Dubs New Lounge Above Slippery Slope 'The Heavy Feather'

By Darryl Holliday | June 26, 2015 9:11am

LOGAN SQUARE — As promised when it launched a year ago, Logan Square dance hall Slippery Slope will open on July 2 a separate but connected lounge upstairs dubbed Heavy Feather.

Co-owner Danny Shapiro of the Scofflaw Group had described Heavy Feather as a lounge back in May of 2014, calling it “a more laid-back feel for people seeking refuge from downstairs."

As promised in 2014, Logan Square dance hall Slippery Slope will open up to a full new bar July 2. (Scofflaw Group)

According to Thursday’s announcement for Heavy Feather, the bar above Slippery Slope, 2357 N. Milwaukee Ave., is “a throwback to the golden lamé era of cocktails” and, much like Humboldt Park’s new C.C. Ferns Café, it draws inspiration from fern bars of the 1970s — an important time in the cultural development of America’s bar scene.

Heavy Feather is described as “a not-so-modern fern bar” with gold mirrors, polished walnut and opulent leather booths where guests from Slippery Slope or straight off Logan Square’s stretch of Milwaukee Ave. can grab a drink “or just chill out.”

The new bar is the fourth Logan Square offering from the Scofflaw Group (not including Slippery Slope's beloved predecessor Bonny's — R.I.P.), which consists of Andy Gould, Kris Nagy, Mandy Tandy and Shapiro, who co-run Scofflaw, Slippery Slope and the new Sink|Swim.

The Heavy Feather’s beverage director is Doug Phillips, who will pull double duty at Slippery Slope as well.

Hours for the new lounge will be 8 p.m. to 2 a.m., Thursday through Sunday. Connect with The Heavy Feather online on Facebook: The Heavy Feather, Twitter: @heavyfeatherchi and Instagram: @heavyfeatherchicago.
