CHICAGO — A man was fatally shot and a woman was critically wounded in a shooting in South Chicago Saturday, police said.

Around 12 p.m., a 46-year-old woman and 21-year-old man were standing outside in the 8400 South Colfax Avenue when a man walked up and fired shots, said Officer Janel Sedevic, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, and the woman was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition, Sedevic said.

A witness, who wished not to be named, said that people on the scene referred to the two victims as mother and son. The man's body was draped over the woman in a protective stance, according to the witness.

A witness said that people on the scene said the two victims were mother and son.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office identified the 21-year-old as James Jones, who lived on the same block as the shooting.

On Monday, a memorial had been set up with candles, balloons and stuffed animals strung along the staircase where the 21-year-old was fatally shot and the woman was critically wounded.

A neighbor, who wished not to be named, was shocked to learn about the shooting.

"It used to be bad here like 10 years ago, but now it's always quiet," she said.

The neighbor and the Tribune said the woman shot was Alicia Jones, whom the neighbor first met when Jones moved into the neighborhood with her family nearly 10 years ago. She described Jones as easygoing and would often sit on her front porch and speak to neighbors as they'd walk by.

"This is just so sad," she said.

According to the neighbor, Jones has previously lost two children, one who was killed in a fire, and another who was fatally shot in a robbery.

Jones' daughter Antoinette Means, died during a 2006 robbery at a KFC restaurant where she worked, the Tribune reported. In 1994, Jones' son, Curtis Jones Jr., was killed in 1994 when two gang members threw a Molotov cocktail through a window, the Tribune also reported.

"It must be tough for Alicia; this is the third child she's lost," the woman said. "I hope she gets better for her daughter."
