CHICAGO — A 29-year-old man was shot to death in Garfield Park Tuesday night, police said.

Around 10 p.m., the man was standing outside a car in the 3400 block of West Madison Street talking with people inside of it when a man came up to them and opened fire, said Officer Ron Gaines, a Chicago Police spokesman.

He was later identified as Lawrence M. Cox, of the 3800 block of West Van Buren Street, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Cox was struck in the side of his stomach and was taken by a friend to a local Veterans Affairs hospital in serious condition. He was later transferred to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Gaines said.

No one is in custody for the shooting.
