Circus of Puerto Rico Performs Month of Original Showings in Humboldt Park

By Darryl Holliday | June 16, 2015 5:39am

HUMBOLDT PARK — The circus is back in town.

The National Circus of Puerto Rico — Circo Nacional de Puerto Rico — will make a stop in Humboldt Park June 16-17 with shows and family friendly presentation at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. both days.

“The National Circus of Puerto Rico returns with great enthusiasm to visit the Boricuas in Chicago,” an announcement from Circo Nacional de Puerto Rico reads. “Filled with colors, joy and their “People’s Circus” (Circo del Pueblo), they’ve arrived to this city to work for those who have found in exile, their home.”

The set of four shows are hosted by the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts & Culture, which has resided in Humboldt Park proper, 3015 W. Division St., for the last 15 years with a mission to “provide a one-of-a-kind showcase for the vast array of traditional and contemporary Puerto Rican arts [and] tell the story of the contributions of people from Puerto Rico in the making of this city and of this nation.”

The museum, located in the heart of Chicago’s Puerto Rican community, “is a cultural center for all people.”

From Humboldt Park, Circo Nacional de Puerto Rico will travel downtown to Institutoe Cervantes, 31 W. Ohio St., for one more performance in Chicago after shows during the 606 grand opening and at the Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center in Humboldt Park.

The group’s original work "El Circo Del Pueblo" features a circus troop stranded in a small town's train station and their efforts of enlisting the town folks to help them on their journey. The piece is a mix of music, games and interaction with the public of all ages.

More information on the Chicago shows, including the June 16-17 Humboldt Park performances ($10 for adults and children over 6 years of age), can be found here.
