CHICAGO — A 23-year-old woman was fatally shot on the porch of her Englewood home early Saturday, officials said.
At 2:50 a.m., Kelly Burrell and a 20-year-old man were sitting on a porch in the 7300 block of South Green Street, when a light-colored SUV drove up and someone inside fired shots, according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.
Burrell, of the same block, was shot in her chest and taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 5:48 a.m., the Medical Examiner's office said.
The man was shot in his leg and suffered a graze wound on his stomach, and was also taken to Christ where his condition had stabilized, said Stacey Cooper, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.
According to police, the man is a documented gang member.
Burrell was the mother of four children — three girls and a boy ranging from about 3 months old to 6 years old, neighbors said. She had lived on the block for about two years, neighbors said.
Burrell and several family members were on the porch earlier when a robbery was committed on the block. The robber had a confrontation with the group before leaving, only to return minutes later and "shoot up the house," said a neighbor, who refused to give her name.
When the man returned to open fire, Burrell's nephew attempted to shield her from the gunfire, but the gunman still hit her several times, neighbors said.
"He didn't have to do that. Now he took this young lady from her four kids," the neighbor said.
