WEST RIDGE — Jamieson Elementary, one of the most overcrowded schools in the city, will be getting a new $12.98 million, three-story annex come next fall.

The Public Building Commission Board revealed renderings of what the 14-classroom building will look like, complete with an adjacent playlot and dedicated learning spaces for music and science. The new annex, at the school's 5650 N. Mozart St. location in West Ridge, would also have a kitchen and lunchroom.

The multi-million dollar contract was awarded to Old Veteran Construction, Inc., which is expected to begin work on the 38,000-square-foot campus addition this summer and complete it by September of 2016.

Upgrades to existing building structures and classrooms will also be made during the rennovation process.

The school's existing playlot will be redone and modular classrooms will be replaced with the extra interior classrooms.

In the current building, the kitchen will be converted into a classroom and new wheelchair-friendly ramps will be installed at various access points to allow for easier travel for students with disabilities.

The existing structure will also get a new teachers lounge as well as wireless technology upgrades.

In December, plans for the annex were in the works for the top tier school—however the newest scaled-back version is still "designed to ease overcrowding," according to the board.
