CHICAGO — A teen fatally shot in his chest Wednesday night in Bridgeport has been identified as Jeremy Salinas, 17, of Bridgeport.

Around 8:35 p.m., Salinas was shot in the chest while standing on the corner with a group in the 900 block of West 32nd Place, police said.

Salinas, of the 1200 block of West 31st Place, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Family of the teen created a makeshift memorial for him out of candles, Corona beer bottles and a wreath Thursday morning. As family embraced near the memorial, a small woman repeatedly cried, "why?"

A neighbor, who refused to give his name, said he moved on the block in October. Compared to Wednesday night's mayhem, it's been quiet, he said.

"I was in the house when they did [the] drive-by. I heard about five shots, and they just skeeted away," he said, turning his head to look east on 32nd Place toward Lituanica Avenue.

A light-colored car was seen speeding away from the block after the shooting, police said.

The man said the block sits between the turf of two gangs, and the beef didn't end with Jeremy's death.

"When police left around 4 a.m. or so, they came back and got to shooting again. Then someone came down and starting hitting cars," he said.

Police said Jeremy was a gang member, but they would not say if the shooting was gang-related.

No one is in custody for the shooting.
