New Logan Square Alderman Sets Up Shop on Milwaukee Ave.

By Darryl Holliday | June 9, 2015 9:28am

LOGAN SQUARE — Incoming alderman Carlos Ramirez-Rosa (35th) set up shop over the weekend, officially opening his Logan Square office to the public.

Ramirez-Rosa welcomed guests, friends and family to his new ward office Saturday at 2710 N. Sawyer, just off Milwaukee Avenue in Logan Square, the same location as his predecessor, former alderman Rey Colon.

The new 35th Ward alderman handily beat Colon in February when he won a majority of every district in the ward, making the 20-something millennial one of the youngest aldermen ever elected to Chicago's City Council.

To put that in perspective, Ald. Ed Burke (14th), also elected at age 26, had already been on the Council for 20 years when Ramirez-Rosa was born. Ramirez-Rosa came in with 67 percent of the vote to Colon's 33 percent, making him the only challenger to knock off an incumbent alderman outright the February election.

Aside from meetings with local politicians, including state Sen. William Delgado, who also attended his office inauguration, Ramirez-Rosa has also been meeting with his new constituents — one of his first public acts as alderman has been to issue a letter to Chicago Park District CEO Michael Kelly in support of reopening the Humboldt Park Beach, an area not within his ward boundaries but frequented by his constituents, leaving some supporters asking where a letter from Humboldt Park Ald. Roberto Maldonado (26th) might be found.

The redrawn 35th Ward consists of portions of Logan Square, Avondale, Irving Park, Albany Park and Hermosa.
