COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURT HOUSE — A Roseland man was charged with involuntary manslaughter after the shooting death of his friend earlier this year, prosecutors said in court Sunday.

According to Assistant State's Attorney Akash Vyas, Lampley was playing with a gun in the backseat of a parked car on Feb. 25.

Lampley, 23, of the 11300 block of South Parnell Avenue, was in a car smoking cannabis and listening to music with friends when he allegedly forgot there was a bullet in the chamber of the gun. As Lampley was moving to the music with the gun in his hand, the gun went off and shot his friend (identified later as Derrius Drakes), who was sitting in the front passenger seat, officials said.

Drakes, 23, was struck in his back, and the bullet was lodged in his chest, Vyas said.

After the shooting, Lampley hid the gun and put Drakes in a truck before driving him to Roseland Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead, Vyas said.

Lampley spoke with detectives at the hospital, however, he was intoxicated and gave conflicting information about the shooting, Vayas said.

The shooting happened around 4:30 p.m., though police initially believed Drakes was standing outside when a gunman shot him in his back, the Sun-Times reported.

One and half months after the incident, Lampley confessed to a third-party witness that he had accidentally shot the victim, Vayas said.

Other witnesses who were in the vehicle at the time of the shooting identified Lampley, Vayas said.

Police recovered the vehicle and found a single bullet hole through the front passenger seat, Vayas said.

Cook County Judge James Brown held Lampley in lieu of $200,000 bail Sunday.
