WEST TOWN —   On Saturday, a by-appointment-only Grand Avenue bakery specializing in macarons will be celebrating its first year in business by opening the doors to the public.

Sweets fans who aren't partial to the tiny French sandwich cookies stuffed with meringue can head to Stan's in Wicker Park Friday, where they're giving away one free glazed doughnut with any drink buy.

Usually open only by appointment, with macarons available for pick-up or delivery, Chef Catherine Cooper opened Bon Macaron, 1407 W. Grand Ave., last June.

The venture was a second career for Cooper, who quit her job at age 40 to move to Paris and attend Ecole Ferrandi, where she earned a diploma in classical French cuisine and interned at a two-star Michelin rated restaurant in Paris.

This Saturday, Cooper will host a "retail Saturday" in celebration of her shop's anniversary.  Hours will be 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, according to a news release.

Meanwhile, in Wicker Park, 1560 N. Damen Ave. and Streeterville, 259 E. Erie St., both Stan's Donut locations will be celebrating "National Doughnut Day" on Friday.

Fans of Stan's will get one free glazed doughnut with any coffee purchase. At the Wicker Park Stan's, where you can also score gelato, one free doughnut will be offered to patrons who buy a gelato.

Stan's Friday hours are 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.
