Roxie's Closes After Just Six Months, Will Return as Pop-Up Burger Spot

By Alisa Hauser | June 1, 2015 7:09pm

WICKER PARK — Roxie's, restaurateur Brendan Sodikoff's pizza spot that opened just six months ago, is shifting gears and planning to reopen in mid-June as "a pop-up summer burger shop," it was announced Monday.

Sodikoff, founder of Hogsalt Hospitality, which owns several popular bars and restaurants, confirmed the concept shift and said more details would be available soon.

"Roxie's is temporarily closed while we we prepare for a pop-up summer burger shop. Look for us to reopen in a few weeks. We'll keep you updated on social media and look forward to seeing you soon," read a sign written in Sharpie on the back of a pie-sized slip of paper taped to the restaurant's window.

Adam England, who lives around the corner from Roxie's, located in the former Cafe Con Leche at 1732 N. Milwaukee Ave., said he is "a little surprised that they're taking apart the present concept, considering how successful Roxie's has been selling pizza by the slice."

Furthermore, The 606's Bloomingdale Trail — an elevated 2.7-mile-long path that cyclists, walkers and joggers can hop on and off of — is less than a half-block north of Roxie's and set to open to the masses on Saturday.

England said he and his girlfriend eat at Roxie's at least once each week and while there have been lulls in business, Roxie's has been busy the past several times they dined there, with "hipsters late at night and at 6 p.m., families shoving pizza into kids' faces."

Roxie's is not the only Hogsalt Hospitality shift in the works. The former Dillman's, which morphed into Cocella at 354 W. Hubbard in River North just over a year ago, will become a coffee shop with an event space at night, the Tribune reports.

Sodikoff tweeted on Monday that pizza will make a return in winter.
