CHICAGO — An off-duty police officer shot an armed robber in Garfield Park Sunday night, police said.

Around 10:25 p.m., the officer exchanged gunfire with the man in the 3400 block of West Madison Street, striking the man in his lower left leg, said Officer Stacey Cooper, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.

The man drove himself to Stroger Hospital, where he is now in custody. His condition is unknown, Cooper said.

According to the Tribune, the officer was a Cook County Sheriff's officer and was taken to an area hospital as a precaution after the shooting.
