CHICAGO — A 37-year-old man died after jumping into the Chicago River on the Near North Side Sunday morning, officials said.

Around 10:42 a.m., the Chicago Police Marine Unit responded to a call after a man jumped into the river at 1232 W. North Ave., police and fire officials said.

Cmdr. Frank Velez with the Chicago Fire Department said the man was pinpointed with the help of bystanders who saw him jump into the northern branch of the river.

After arriving to the scene, the Chicago Fire Department's Dive Team was able to pull the man out within minutes, Velez said.

The 37-year-old was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead, Stacey Cooper, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.

No further information was available.
