COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A North Lawndale man has been charged in the 2013 shooting that killed Willie Bush and wounded two others.

Prosecutors said Bush, 49, was sitting with friends on his porch in the 1200 block of South Lawndale Avenue on Aug. 17, 2013, when roughly 10 people walked toward the house around 11:30 p.m.

Martez Staples, now 26, and his uncle were in the group, according to Assistant State's Attorney Jaime Santini, who spoke during a brief bond hearing Friday.

The uncle had just been beaten in a nearby alley and wanted to know who attacked him, Santini said. When the group standing on Bush's porch denied knowing anything about the attack, they allegedly heard someone with Staples say "f--- them."

At that point, Staples and two others opened fire, according to authorities. No one on Bush's porch was armed, Santini said, and the shooters continued to shoot as the victims lay wounded on the ground.

Willie Bush was shot 13 times and pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital on Aug. 20, 2013. A 39-year-old man was shot multiple times and survived. A 16-year-old was also shot, Santini said.

Staples, of the 1200 block of South St. Louis Avenue, was charged with first-degree murder and held without bail.

Prosecutors said there's still a warrant out for Staples' uncle's arrest.
