BRIDGEPORT — The White Sox will retire Paul Konerko’s No. 14 jersey Saturday with a sold-out, pregame celebration at U.S. Cellular Field.
That means fans can expect The Cell to resemble more of a madhouse than a ballpark. Like Opening Day, there will be traffic jams, packed parking lots and a sea of ticket-holders heading to their seats.
Here’s what you need to know to make your journey to the game a little easier:
Schedule
Slated for 2:25 p.m., the Konerko celebration will be broadcast by WGN-TV before the Sox battle the Minnesota Twins at 3:10 p.m.
Transportation
To avoid traffic, fans can take public transportation with CTA, Metra or Pace.
Parking
At 11 a.m., all parking lots open. Credit cards will be accepted for parking spots.
If you do not have pre-paid parking passes and arrive after 1:30 p.m., you should head to remote parking lots available at the Illinois Institute of Technology (33rd and State streets). Don't forget your cash. Remote lots are cash only.
Shuttle Service
To get to U.S. Cellular, you can hop a free shuttle service in the remote lots at IIT.
Smoking Area Closed
In order to alleviate foot traffic at the gates, the smoking area at Gate 5 will be closed until game time. Fans wanting to smoke before the first pitch can go to Gate 2 on the right field side of U.S. Cellular Field.
