Man in Body Armor Runs From Police, Hides in Pile of Leaves

COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A man wearing body armor who ran away from police at Rainbow Beach Park was found hiding in a pile of leaves at the park, prosecutors said.

Police were called to the 3000 block of East 78th Street about 4:30 a.m. Monday, following reports of a disturbance in the area, according to an arrest report.

When police arrived at Rainbow Beach, they saw Shannon Ross, 25, standing over a box of ammunition while wearing body armor, Assistant State's Attorney Lorraine Scaduto said during a bond hearing Tuesday.

Ross took off running, police and prosecutors said, and was found trying to hide under a nearby pile of leaves. Police found 27 bullets for a .38 caliber gun in the box of ammo. Ross also had five bullets in his pocket, Scaduto said.

Ross, who lives in the 3000 block of East 78th Street, was charged with misdemeanor unlawful use of body armor and felony unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.

Cook County Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. ordered Ross held in lieu of $100,000 bail.
