NORWOOD PARK — Bike 45 will pay tribute to Superdawg founder Maurie Berman, who died this week, with a memorial bicycle ride Saturday.

Berman, who founded Superdawg drive-in with his wife, Flaurie, in 1948 and transformed it into a Northwest Side icon, died early Sunday morning from heart problems, his son Scott Berman said. He was 89.

The 15-mile ride will leave at 9 a.m. Saturday from Perkolator Cafe, 6032 W. Irving Park Road, and stop at Superdawg, 6363 N. Milwaukee Ave., where at least one hungry rider is sure to order a Superdawg — a pure beef frank in a poppy-seed bun topped with mustard, piccalilli, a dill pickle, chopped Spanish onions and a "memorable" hot pepper — but no ketchup.

Ride organizers called Superdawg the crown jewel of the 45th Ward, which now includes the famed hot dog restaurant.

The ride will end in the parking lot of Portage Park's namesake park, 4100 N. Long Ave.

Ald. John Arena (45th) founded Bike 45 to promote biking and bike safety in Jefferson Park and parts of Portage Park, Gladstone Park, Old Irving Park, Norwood Park and Forest Glen.

The group holds an annual ride to Superdawg.

Bicyclists of all ages are welcome to ride, but children younger than 18 must be accompanied by an adult and adult riders may accompany no more than 3 children per adult rider.
