MOUNT GREENWOOD — The addition of modular classrooms at Mount Greenwood Elementary School remains on track for the 2015-2016 school year.

The Public Building Commission approved a $2.28 million contract with OCA Construction Inc. on Tuesday.

The woman-owned construction firm based in suburban Willow Springs will build and install the six-classroom modular unit at the school at 10841 S. Homan Ave. in Mount Greenwood.

Construction on the modular building will begin in mid-June and be completed at the end of August, according to a release issued by the commission on Thursday.

The expansion will boost the number of classrooms from 38 to 44 at the school. These new classrooms will replace a pair of playgrounds.

A new playground is slated for property on the northeast corner of the school. It will be built near an eight-room addition to Mount Greenwood School that opened in 2011. The $7.9 million permanent structure included a new cafeteria.

The addition of modulars was announced in February by Ald. Matt O'Shea (19th). At the time, he said the school was operating at 122 percent of its capacity.

The Southwest Side elementary school has 1,060 students. Its capacity is listed at 870 students, O'Shea said.

A similar modular addition was built last summer at the nearby George F. Cassell Fine Arts School. That $3.5 million project added eight classrooms and a playground at 11314 S. Spaulding Ave.

A pair of community hiring sessions for the upcoming project at Mount Greenwood School will be held at Mount Greenwood Park, 3721 W. 111th St. The first session will be from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. June 17. The second session will be from 3-6 p.m. June 25.

Applications to work on the project will be accepted during the sessions. For more information, contact the public building commission at 312-744-3090 or visit its website.
