LINCOLN PARK — San Francisco-based retailer Marine Layer is really against cookie-cutter store design.
That is evident in its two Chicago locations.
The newest of the two, which opened in Lincoln Park last weekend, is a custom layout that is based around a full-length shuffleboard table at 849 W. Armitage Ave.

The shop also features a custom painted back-lit sign.
The Bucktown location, which opened in May 2014 offering the shop's specialty "perfectly soft" T-shirts and other clothing, is not to be outdone.
The company acquired an apartment above the shop and is outfitting it to become a specialty Airbnb property.
The company did the same thing above its Portland location, which is located on the first floor of an old house, for $175 per night.
"We sort of tricked it out in away that feels very on-brand," said Megan Williams, the company's brand manager and creative director. "It has old-school retro games, cocktail mixers and a really comfortable bed."

Airbnb reviewers seem to agree, as the listing has stellar reviews.
The Bucktown apartment above the shop, 1646 N. Damen Ave., is a three-bedroom unit that Marine Layer is currently decking out.
"We aren't trying to get into the Airbnb business, per say, but we thought it would be a really fun brand opportunity for us," Williams said.
