CHICAGO — Three men are facing charges after a carjacking that led to a police chase in Lincoln Park Wednesday night, police said in a statement.

Jawanza Brown, 21, of the 1600 block of Warren Boulevard, was charged with one count of vehicular hijacking. Two 17-year-olds were each charged with one count of vehicular hijacking. One of the teenagers also faces an additional charge of attempted robbery, police said.

Around 11:10 p.m. Wednesday, Brown and the teenagers approached a 32-year-old man who was getting into his 2002 Chevy Malibu in the 1800 block of North Clybourn Avenue, police said.

Brown asked the man to roll down his window, which he did. Then Brown asked the man, "How do you want it, shot or stabbed?" then reached into his jacket, implying he had a gun, according to police.

Brown then told the man again, "We're takin' this car, do you want to get shot or stabbed?" police said.

The man then got out of the car; Brown and the two teenagers got in the car and fled. Police spotted the stolen car and attempted to pull them over, which they refused to do, police said.

After a short chase, Brown crashed the car into a Popeyes, at 1949 N. Fullerton Ave. and ran away on foot. After a brief chase, all three men were taken into custody, police said.

After the chase, Brown told police "I really didn't have a gun or knife I just wanted to get him out of the car quicker. I just wanted to get the car," according to police.

Cook County Judge Peggy Chiampas held Brown on $750,000 bail Friday afternoon.
