LOGAN SQUARE — A 15-year-old boy was shot outside of a Walgreens in Logan Square Monday afternoon.
Around 1:45 p.m., the teenager was walking with another person in the 3100 block of West Armitage Avenue when a car drove up and a person inside started to yell gang slogans before firing shots, said Officer Bari Lemmon, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.
The boy was shot in his leg and taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center in good condition, Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said. No further information was immediately available.
District 14 Police Commander Marc Buslik said his responding officers acted quickly and used the wounded boy's belt as a tourniquet to stop the bleeding.
Police cordoned off a section of the Walgreens parking lot at 3110 W. Armitage Ave. The victim's bloody shirt and shoes remained on the ground following the shooting.
A 25-year resident of the neighborhood, who wished not to be named, said it was the first time he could recall a shooting in the area.
"[This] just makes you think that no one should have guns," he said.
Another resident heard at least six shots before coming out of his home.
"After hearing the shots, I came out and saw a teenage boy on the ground covered in blood," said the neighbor, who asked not to be named.
"I've been living here for three years and nothing like this has happened," he said. "It's pretty weird because this neighborhood is so calm and quiet."
