COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — Prosecutors said a South Side man was driving nearly 90 mph when he slammed into a pedestrian in Chatham this weekend, sending the woman flying nearly 100 feet and killing her.

George Evans, 23, was driving a rental car at the time. He told police he totaled his own car in a crash the week before, Assistant State's Attorney Akash Vyas said during a bond hearing Wednesday.

Evans, of the 9700 block of South Green Street, was charged with reckless homicide and held in lieu of $250,000 bail.

The victim, believed to be a woman in her 20s, still hasn't been identified.

Evans was driving a rental Volkswagen on Sunday night with his cousin and cousin's young children in the car, Vyas said. About 9:30 p.m., one of the kids asked to use a washroom, and Evans allegedly said he'd get them all home.

Evans got on the Dan Ryan Expressway at 79th Street and headed south to the 87th Street exit, prosecutors said. There, he drove up the ramp and blew through a stop light at 87th and Lafayette.

According to witnesses and a red light camera speed chart, Evans was driving 80 to 90 mph, prosecutors said.

He hit a pedestrian who'd been crossing the street with such force that the Volkswagen's front windshield completely shattered and the woman was tossed 100 feet, Vyas said.

Evans refused chemical testing.

In addition to his criminal charges, he was cited for speeding, failing to stop at a red light and failing to stop for a crosswalk when the pedestrian had the right of way.
