CHICAGO — A police officer fatally shot a pitbull while responding to a call in the far south Chicago neighborhood East Side on Sunday.
Around 10 a.m., officers responded to a call of a man entering a backyard with a gun in the 9500 block of South Ewing Avenue, said Officer Veejay Zala, a Chicago police spokesman.
When police arrived, they saw a man fitting the description and a pit bull. The officers asked the man to tie the dog to a fence as they attempted to approach, but the man ignored officers and released the dog in the officers' direction, Zala said.
One officer, who feared for his life, shot the dog, who later died, Zala said.
The man was taken into custody and had a weapon on him, Zala said.
