CITY HALL — A famous Chicago address is being converted into senior housing.

The City Council's Zoning Committee approved a plan Thursday to build senior housing at 3535 N. Ashland Ave., longtime home of Bert Weinman Ford.

Weinman's TV spokesman, who typically proclaimed himself "Linn Burton, for certain," made famous the address of "your TV Ford man" at "3535 North on Ashland Avenue" in spots that ran on local stations from the '60s into the '80s.

Weinman typically sponsored "Flash Gordon" serials on WGN-TV Channel 9 on Sunday mornings and other low-cost local programming.

Ald. Tom Tunney (44th) cheered the move, saying the site had been "languishing for a number of years" since the dealership closed in 2006.

The Zoning Committee clears the way for Artis Senior Living of Wrigleyville to construct a 140-unit building on the site for assisted living.

"We think it's a good use for Ashland Avenue," Tunney said.

The measure cleared the committee by a voice vote and heads for final approval before the full City Council on May 6.
