PALMER SQUARE — Here's one more reason to enjoy a walk through the neighborhood this weekend: the oracle of spring in Logan Square reopens Friday.

After pushing their spring opener up one day to take advantage of Friday's spring weather, Miko’s Italian Ice, 2236 N Sacramento Ave., will be serving five ice-cold flavors for the start of its 18th year in Logan Square, just a short walk north of Palmer Square Park. The Bucktown location, at 1846 N. Damen Ave., will also open Friday.

The shop opens after the first string of 60-degree weather days, according to owner Zach Roombos, leading to its local reputation as the bearer of good news after so much cold. Last year the shop opened April 10, and it opened April 6 the year before. In one rare instance it opened its doors as early as March when Chicago saw a string of 80-degree days at the start of spring 2012.

We're officially closed for the season. See you next year!

The neighborhood gem will have five flavors Friday, April 17 and will add new flavors as the weather gets warmer, Roombos said.

Lemon, coconut mango, strawberry, passion fruit and banana with chocolate chips will be on deck at the window counter from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and noon to 6 p.m. Saturday.

Friday and Saturday are expected to be sunny with a temperature in the 70s, by the way.
