GRAND CROSSING — Traveling doesn’t have to be expensive, said travel expert Aurora Cruz, who will share tips and suggest affordable travel destinations close to Chicago next month.

The Greater Auburn Gresham Development Corporation has invited Cruz, a former travel tour director, to lead a discussion on travel. The workshop is scheduled for May 5 at the Urban Partnership Bank, second floor, 7801 S. State St., from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

“My goal is to encourage and inspire people to travel even if it’s a small trip and to show them how to look for deals,” Cruz said, who used to work in Alaska helping tourists.

“I just want to encourage them to think outside of the box and not necessarily think ‘OK, I just want to go to Vegas,’ but think of something that might be closer, but it wouldn’t cost as much money,” she said.

Some nearby attractions that might get overlooked, she said, are Lake Geneva, Wisconsin; Galena, Illinois; and Michigan City, Indiana. Cruz has been to all three.

She will also discuss prices for traveling to Mexico and Puerto Rico from Chicago. Cruz said she’s considering planning a group trip for residents, but details have been set yet.
