CHICAGO — A 3-year-old boy was struck by a car when he chased a puppy into the street Tuesday in Chicago Lawn, police said.

Around 6:55 p.m., a 36-year-old man was driving a Chevrolet van in the 6900 block of South Talman Avenue when the boy darted into the street from between parked cars and was struck by the van, said Officer Stacey Cooper, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.

The boy was identified by family as Elias Burton. After the accident, the driver of the car and Elias' grandfather put the boy into the van and drove him to Holy Cross Hospital a few blocks away, according to the Tribune.

The boy's mother, Evelina Matthews, said her son was put in a medically induced coma and transferred to Christ Hospital, the Tribune reported.

The boy was listed in critical condition, Cooper said.

No tickets were issued and alcohol was not a factor. The Major Accidents Unit is not investigating the incident, Cooper said.
