CHICAGO — Two men were wounded in a shooting early Saturday in Humboldt Park, on a block where a man was killed last month and neighbors have complained about increased gang activity.

Around 4:50 a.m., two men, 31 and 33, were walking out of a home in the 800 block of North Mozart Avenue when a passing vehicle yelled gang slogans and fired shots, said Officer Hector Alfaro, a Chicago police spokesman.

The 31 year old was shot in his stomach and 33 year old was shot in his upper right arm. The two drove themselves to Norwegian American Hospital and were listed in good condition, Alfaro said.

"I woke up to four [or more] shots and then all these younger-looking folks came flying out of the building and piled into four cars," a Humboldt Park resident said.  "A girl seemed reluctant to flee but her friends forced her to. They all sped away a few minutes before cops came."

The resident said they watched as a group of people "scrambled into four cars."

"One girl was the last to come out and she was screaming at her friends and a few kept yelling [at] her to get in the car," the resident said.

As they sped away, a man driving the fleeing vehicle hit a parked car in front of him before leaving the scene, the resident said.

A 40-year-old man who lives a few doors away from where the shootings happened said, "It's very disturbing."

He said the early-morning shooting was the first one he can recall in 15 years of living on the relatively quiet block.

No one is in custody, and police are investigating.

Last month, Fabian Echevarria, 24, a father of a five year-old son, was gunned down a block away from his home in the 900 block of North Mozart Avenue.

During a CAPS meeting this week, police said Echevarria's death was not gang-related.

Jorge Hernandez, 43, who lives nearby, said gang activity has been an on-going issue in the neighborhood for the last couple of years.

Hernandez said his 19-year-old son, who is not affiliated with a gang, was standing in the front yard when he was shot in his stomach last year.
