CHICAGO — Peoples Gas has started doling out more than $29 million to Chicago residents, company officials said Wednesday.
Customers will begin to see a credit to their bills; the average is $29.50 for Peoples Gas clientele. The payments will continue to show up on bills through December.
The refunds are a byproduct of an initiative by Peoples Gas known as the "Volume Balancing Adjustment" that provides refunds after winters that are colder than normal and bills are higher usual.
By the time 2015 wraps up, Peoples Gas and North Shore will have made more than an estimated $59 million in refunds to customers since 2008, when the adjustment for cold temps was first initiated.
