PORTAGE PARK — The Chicago Ballet Center, which left Logan Square last year for Six Corners, will host a design competition on Sunday for its new studio, officials said.

The Chicago Ballet Center plans to take over the fourth floor of 4041 N. Milwaukee Ave., which is already home to several other arts organizations, including the National Veterans Art Museum and the Filament Theatre Ensemble.

Since September, the Ballet Center has been holding classes around the corner at 4024 N. Cicero Ave. while efforts were underway to secure a permanent home for the dance school in what was once a former furniture warehouse but is now the heart of the burgeoning Six Corners arts and entertainment district.

Heather Cherone says it's a big deal for the students:

Five students from the Harrington College of Design on Sunday will present their plans for the studio and a panel of experts will pick a winner, director Paul Abrahamson said.

The jury will include two Harrington College faculty members; an interior design professional;
Marc Sussman, the building's owner; Chicago Ballet Center Board President Jeff Stachula, a graphic designer; and Abrahamson.

Ald. John Arena (45th), who has been working to turn Six Corners into an arts and culture mecca in an effort to reverse decades of decline and fill empty storefronts near Irving Park Road and Milwaukee and Cicero avenues, has also been invited to serve on the jury, Abrahamson said.

The first-, second- and third-place designs will win a cash prize, and all who attend the celebration scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m. Sunday will have a chance to vote for the people's prize, Abrahamson said.

Champagne, coffee, hot chocolate and snacks will be served, Abrahamson said.
