MORGAN PARK — Orbert Davis will have a short commute on April 26.
That's when the accomplished trumpet player from Beverly will bring his Chicago Jazz Philharmonic Chamber Ensemble to the Beverly Arts Center. The 3 p.m. show celebrates the 10th anniversary of Davis' 60-piece jazz orchestra.
Davis has been the artistic director of the group since its inception. He's lived in the Southwest Side neighborhood since 2007 with his wife, Lisa, and their children, Zoe, 18, Sydney 14, Donovan, 8 and Benjamin, 5.
The upcoming show at the center, 2407 W. 111th St. in Morgan Park, comes on the heels of Davis' tribute concert on Feb. 6 at the Symphony Center in the Loop. This concert was a nod to Gunther Schuller, 90.
Schuller coined the term "Third Stream" in 1957. The new genre combined jazz and classical techniques. Schuller was in the audience for the concert and said racial tension caused an early backlash against his style of music.
Davis continues to carry the torch for this unique form of jazz-classical fusion. For more information about the upcoming show, visit the Beverly Art Center's Web site or call 773-445-3838.
