Man Charged in Hit-in-Run that Left a Woman Dead in Englewood

CHICAGO — A man was charged in a fatal hit-and-run crash that left one woman dead Thursday in Englewood, Chicago police said in a statement Saturday.

Mathew Price, 69, of the 5400 block of South Peoria Street, was charged with failure to report an accident involving a death and failure to give information or give aid for an injury, police said. Price was also charged with striking a pedestrian in the roadway.

Price was arrested after he was identified as the driver who struck the 22-year-old woman, police said.

At 1:45 p.m., woman was crossing the street at 61st and Halsted streets when she was hit by Price's Mercury Sedan heading north on Halsted, police said.

Police said Price drove off after hitting the woman. He was later arrested in the 5300 block of South Union Avenue.

The woman was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition and was later pronounced dead.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office identified the woman as Jazzalyn Fontanez of the 1700 block of North Campbell Avenue. She was pronounced shortly before 7 p.m Thursday.

Price is scheduled to appear in bond court Saturday.
