SAUGANASH — Crews are scheduled to begin replacing the 100-year sewer underneath Keystone Avenue in Sauganash this week, Ald. Margaret Laurino (39th).
The work is expected to snarl traffic along Peterson Avenue near Pulaski Road, Laurino said.
The first phase of the project will start at Peterson and Keystone avenues before moving a half-block north, Laurino said.
Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction on the south side of Peterson Avenue. Traffic traveling westbound on Peterson Avenue at Pulaski Road will be diverted to the south side of the street, Laurino said.
In addition, Keystone Avenue will be closed to traffic at Peterson Avenue. However, drivers will be able to reach businesses by Glenlake Avenue during the first phase of the work, which is expected to last four to six weeks.
Crews are working throughout the city to replace 12-inch sewer mains with significantly larger pipes in an effort to prevent nearby homes from flooding, city officials said.
