RIVER NORTH — A piece of glass from a broken window at 101 E. Erie St. fell and struck a pedestrian Thursday afternoon, causing injuries.

A man walking below the high rise was struck in the head by a piece of falling glass around 1 p.m. Thursday, according to Larry Langford, a Chicago Fire Department spokesman.

The man suffered cuts to his head and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he is in good condition, according to a Chicago Fire Department spokesman.

Langford said the Fire Department hasn't identified a cause yet. The surrounding stretch of Rush Street was closed as crews inspected the window and cleared out shards of glass.

The office building at 101 E. Erie St. is currently being converted into a Conrad hotel.

Police declined to comment at the scene, but spectators gathered to watch glass continue to fall from the tower at around 2 p.m. One man staying at a nearby hotel needed a police escort to take his luggage through the cordoned-off area.

Last year a full pane of glass fell from a Streeterville high rise on Fairbanks Court, but no one was injured. In 1999, a woman was killed from glass that fell from the CNA Center, 333 S. Wabash Ave.
