EDGEBROOK — A sixth-grade student at Wildwood Elementary School determined to put unethical pet stores out of business raised $275 for Chicago Canine Rescue, school officials said.
Nora Power, who has organized projects every year since she was in second grade to improve the lives of people and animals across the world, donated $275 to the Forest Glen-based animal rescue organization.
Nora raised the money by organizing a campaign against puppy mills, Wildwood Principal Mary Beth Cunat said.
A ban on the sale of puppies, kittens and rabbits in Chicago went into effect March 5. Violators of the ordinance that was approved last year will receive daily fines of $1,000. Repeat offenders can be charged with a misdemeanor.
In 2011, Nora was honored by the United Nations Children's Fund for raising $1,400 for the international organization that works to provide children with food, medicine and vaccines.
