CHICAGO — After a tumultuous February with record-breaking cold weather, we can breathe a sigh of relief.

The warm up this weekend is expected to continue into next week, said Bill Nelson, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

Temperatures Saturday will hover in the lower to mid 40s. On Sunday, a few more clouds will make it feel a bit cooler but temperatures will remain in the low 40s, Nelson said.

And the warmer temps will stick around awhile — reaching the 50s by Tuesday and Wednesday.

If you're sick of climbing over piles of icy snow to get to your parked car, you're in luck.

With daytime temperatures in the 40s, places with a few inches of ice-packed snow can expect it to melt by Monday. Those with more than 10 inches of snow will have to wait a bit longer, Nelson said.

But don't get too excited: the cold could (and probably will) return:

"It is March in Chicago," said Kevin Birk, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service. "Typically, we see warmups like this, then a cold front comes through."
