CHICAGO — A South Side man has been charged with killing a man and shooting his pregnant fiancee in Back of the Yards last April, police said.

Otis Harriel, 47, of the 1400 block of South Canal Street is charged with one count of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery with a firearm.

Police said Harriel killed 21-year-old Martavian Emery and shot Emery's 19-year-old fiancee in the 5400 block of South Winchester Avenue on April 26.

Police said Emery was playing cards with his friends and fiancee at 1:15 a.m. when bullets came through his kitchen window, striking Emery in his chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Emery's fiancee, who was pregnant at the time, was shot in her leg.

Harriel has an extensive criminal background dating to 1985, sources said. He's been arrested 48 times and convicted six, the most recent on a November 2011 drug possession charge.

Harriel is scheduled to appear in bond court Friday.
