CHICAGO — Keep your dog's pearly whites squeaky clean with an event from Pet Stuff on Wells this weekend.

For National Pet Dental Health Month, the shop at 1201 N. Wells St. in Old Town will host a dog teeth cleaning demonstration from noon-2 p.m. Saturday.

Animal care technician Tara Laffy will show proper technique, and there will also be a raffle for pet dental products.

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, brushing can help prevent gum disease, a common affliction in dogs. Periodontal disease develops when food particles and bacteria collect along the gum line and form plaque, the society says.

The plague, over time, turns to "rock-hard" tartar which, if it isn't removed, could inflame the animal's gums leading to more serious problems.

The society says dogs should have their teeth brushed at least several times a week.
