COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A suburban man was arrested in Chicago this week after he rented a stolen rental car from the man who stole it, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Police spotted the 2014 Dodge Avenger cruising through Washington Heights about 5:30 p.m. Monday, according to an arrest report.

When police stopped the driver — Martel Rodgers, 29 — he told them, "I got the car from Greg about five days ago. I knew he rented it. I paid him $275," the report said.

The car was rented from Payless Car Rental earlier this year and due back on Jan. 19, police and prosecutors said. The rental firm officially reported it stolen on Feb. 20.

There's no word yet on where "Greg" is or whether he'll be charged.

Rodgers, who lives in suburban Riverdale, was arrested in the 10300 block of South Halsted Street and charged with possession of a stolen vehicle.

Cook County Judge Maria Kuriakos Ciesil released him on his own recognizance Tuesday.
